COORPAROO PARK
“Coorparoo Park is a training facility managed by Lynne and Robert Thomas dedicated to the spelling and rehabilitation of performance horses.”
Located in Wagga Wagga NSW midway between Sydney and Melbourne in the beautiful Riverina, the property is easily accessible as well as having regular transport services to the area.
The facility is equipped with a water walker, a dry walker, rubberised stables with corbro flooring as well as multiple grass day yards fenced with electrobraid (one of the safest horse fences on the market).
We only accept a limited number of horses at one time so we can ensure each horse receives personalised attention.
A resident veterinarian ensures every horse’s health and progress is closely monitored.
WATER WALKER
Benefits of the Water Walker
It is a well established fact that hydrotherapy is an extremely effective and important training and rehabilitation aid for human athletes. This applies equally to our equine athletes.
The buoyancy of the water effectively reduces a horses weight bearing on their legs and joints. Walking in shoulder depth water gives a much higher intensity workout compared to walking on dry land but without the joint concussion.
It can also improve cardiovascular fitness without the excessive stress on the lungs which swimming can cause making it a much safer alternative for horses prone to bleeding. It will build up muscle and often improve a horses topline as well.
At Coorparoo Park our water walker has been designed to benefit all aspects of performance horse training regimes.
- REHABILITATION FOLLOWING INJURY
In most cases horses can be started in hydrotherapy conditioning sooner than you would be able to start walking or riding on land following an injury.
The higher rate of exertion while moving at a slower pace together with the reduced weight bearing means we can exercise them intensively without over stressing legs or joints. As the horse gets fitter and stronger we can increase the speed at which they walk in the water walker.

PRETRAINING
Again this is an ideal way to develop fitness without the leg stresses. Often after a spell a horse may come back over weight. Working a horse too hard on dry land while they are over weight can potentially cause more injuries. The water walker allows the horse to trim down, get fit and be ready to start into hard work by the time they leave to go back to the trainer.
-
FRESHEN UP
Often when horses have been in working for some time in a stable, they can become ‘sour’. A few days on the water walker can maintain their fitness and give them a mental freshen up and then go straight back into competition.
It is also ideal for bruised feet – we can continue to work these horses while the feet heal so no training time is lost.
-
NO GREASY HEEL
We have found, even in the wettest of seasons, that the horses on the water walker do not suffer from greasy heel. The combination of our customised filtration system and a meticulously monitored salt and chlorine balance effectively prevents greasy heel.
